"We have a secret in our culture. It's not that birth is hard, it's that women are strong."

My name is Meredith Hocking, and I have been a doula since 2006. I have assisted more than 50 women in their birth journeys, and each time I am amazed and awed at the power within a woman to bring forth life.

I have always had a passion for birth, but it took on new meaning with the births of my own children (in 1997 and 1999). At the time, I didn't know what a doula was, but that surely there must be a woman who would be there for me during my labor, encouraging me, reminding me of my strength, assisting with positioning and breathing, and being my anchor. My mother acted in this role for me, which was a blessing. Several years later, I discovered the role of doula, and knew immediately that's what I wanted to do. Once my boys were older, I was able to train through DONA and begin doing what I felt called to do.

I believe that birth is a normal, natural process. I believe that you possess an innate strength and the ability to birth normally, even unmedicated if this is your desire. I believe that birth is the the creation of a family, and as such, is a sacred experience.

My role is to help you define your "optimal birth experience", and then work with you to achieve it by encouraging you to make informed choices during your pregnancy and labor. I do not make choices for you, but support the choices you make.

I have been a staff doula at St. Elizabeth's in Belleville, IL, for more than a year. This has given me experience in enlisting the help of nurses, doctors, and hospital staff so we can work as a team to help you achieve your desired birth.

I do have several back-up doulas that I work with, so if we find we are a good match for each other, I will ensure that my back-up for your birth is fully informed of your preferences and needs ahead of time, just in case I am unable to join you immediately.
